I think in so many ways we no longer take pride in domestic matters. "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff" is everywhere. Looking nice for our hubby is passe - he should see how hard it is to stay home (if we actually do) and how awful life is to be a SAHM. Or how awful life is to be a working mom, that is why the house is always a mess.
We supposedly have so many time saving devices but how come we are pushed and pulled everywhere, run here and run there, errands, school pick up, etc. and we are unhappy, overstressed and overstimulated. Modern life and all its "conveniences" is literally sucking the life out of us.
When we didn't have all these "things," and maybe not even a car, we slowed down and did what needed to be done (bake bread, make clothes, make dinner, talk, etc) life was less stressed. It was hard because it was by hand but it was also communal and that brought some joy.
We also did not have the expectations that life would always be wonderful and we that we should always be "happy." By accepting life was hard you could get on with it.
